OUTSTANDING SEASON
LAWN TENNIS IN WAIKATO ASSOCIATION’S YEAR, MR V. C. HOLLIS NEW PRESIDENT. “On the whole, Waikato tennis has had the most successful season in its history, despite the vagaries of the weather,” -stated Mr L). Seymour, president. lasi evening, when moving the adoption of the report (previously published) at the annual meeting of the Waikato Lawn Tennis Association, held in Hamilton. “Our representatives can congratulate themselves that they have not disgraced the association in interprovincial play,” said Mr Seymour in referring to the high standard maintained by the Waikato teams in Wilding Shield and Nunnerley Casket challenges.
There was a great deal that could be done, said the president, and he felt that the executive officers of the association could help by travelling round the district. The association’s area was one. of the most difficult to organise in New Zealand, but he thought it should he possible for members of the executive to attend meetings of Ihe various sub-associations. It was unfortunate that the Easter tournament should have been abandoned, as the entry was the best that had ever come forward, said Mr Seymour; and lie was sure that the success of the Waikato Wilding Shield and Nunnerley Casket teams had influenced this feature of the tournament. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr S. B. Sims; president, Mr V. C. Hollis; vice-presidents, Messrs H. D. Sampson and A. C. Thompson; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. A. Johnston; management committee, Messrs D. Seymour, A. E. McCracken, B. Fabling, J. Giles, G. H. Kirk, H. G. Keeley and J. F. Farrell; auditor, Mr L. Champion; delegates to New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Professor E. P. Wilson and Messrs V. G. Hollis, E. McCarroll and E. Eichelbaum. The appointment of a banner committee and selectors was referred to the incoming executive. Mr H. D. Sampson (Lower Waikato) suggested that the sub-associations be allowed fo nominate their leading players for selection and that the selection committee could then make the final choice. It was possible under the present, system for the selectors to be unacquainted with the merits of a player in any district. Mr A. E. McCracken pointed out, that prior to selecting teams last season information on the lines advised by Mr Sampson had been sought, but in many cases it had not been forthcoming. A resolution that the sub-association be asked to forward to the executive a list of their six leading players, £oth ladies and men, before November 30, and to notify any changes in their lists from time to time, was carried. Value of Banner Matohes. The question of whether it would be advisable to suspend the Waikato banner competition for a year was raised, and it was contended by most delegates that the fulfilling of engagements in connection with this competition was causing sub-associations embarrassment. “I think at present we have too much competition play, and not enough ‘friendly’ games/’ stated Mr Seymour. There was a tendency, he said, for the season to be
cluttered up with competition matches and many of the most valuable features of the game were being lost. A motion that, the secretary circularise all •sub-associations calling for entries for a banner competition, but nothing out the alternative scheme, was carried, the executive being empowered to suspend the competition if it thought fil. Notice of its intention not to affiliate with the Waikato * Association this season was received from Ihe Hamilton Suburban Association. The president stated that the letter referred apparently only to the intention to follow Ibis course, and he considered It. could not be accepted as a resignation. It was not a question of a subassociation affiliating each year, and there was a definite procedure to follow if a siih-associalion were to lie released from its obligations to the parent body. The matter was referred to the executive. In an effort Io clarify I lie position in regard to capitation Pees due to the association, it was resolved that for the purposes of the levy members of clubs upon which capitation, was payable would be deemed members over the age of If) years.
