GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS.
May Song endorsed the good impression she created on the tracks at headquarters when she won the Hack Flat at Gisboi no yesterday. Hecent Arrivals. Tiger Gain and Journet are amongst the recent arrivals at Riccarton. Santoft In Favour. Santoft is coining Into strong favour for the Grand National Steeplechase because of his favourable impost. Pahu. Pahu has had three falls since Ills second placing in the Wellington Steeplechase, and his failure to get round the light \\ashdyke country last Saturday does not make ills Riccarton prospects appear bright. Galloping Well. Flashbv, tlie Surveyor gelding who is galloping so well at Takanini. is a good-actioned two-year-old. Owing to an accident he had an enlargement In front of one of his hocks, which, however, has not affected his galloping ability. Satisfactory First Up. The Surgeon gave a satisfactory exhibition in his first hurdle race at Washdyke last Saturday, and lie will experience 11 over the battens. lie is n ,, w trained for Mr J. Lindsay, of Dunedin, by 11. A. Andorton, at Wingatul. Last Year. The order at the llnisli of the Win .... up run last year wis w ino 80, ... merit pitch $.13. Polity 8.9. Adaleim . Boomerang 8.1. Mount Yal 8.0, ,m \olo 5.9, Metal Bird 8.0, Epris 0.9, and Wall Street 5.3.
Bon Star. . j Another effort 1b being made to , train the Australian-bred Bon Stai. A surprise win at Takapuna la h only success to date and his troub . Is a knee that is anything but sound. | Valamlto. i A rising four-year-old who appears to be doing well at Takanini is Valamito. This fellow raced well this season and has the size and spee develop into a good horse. A Mark of Respeot. The gentlemen riders who took par in the Pareora Steeplechase at Washdyke on Saturday wore 'black armbands out of respect to Mr R. Harper, who met with fatal injuries at the Waimate fixture a week previously. Kilonaa. * , Kilonsa is going along steadily at Ellerslie without being unduly hurried. She did well for H. Jury during the season just ending and it will cause no surprise if she does better next season. Interesting Contestant. An interesting contestant in the hurdle race at Washdyke last Saturdav was Night Sail, a five-year-old mare by Night Raid from Set Sail, a well-known handicap performer of a few years ago. Like her dam, Night Sail races in the colours of her breeder, Dr. J. E. Rogers, of Southland, and is trained by P. T. Hogan.
Southerner Doing Nicely. Rebel Chief has come through a solid season’s racing splendidly and he is in the right order to undergo a final preparation for the Grand National meeting (says a southern writer). This season he started thirty-five times for seven wins, six seconds, one third and £897 in stakes. Dollar Bill Destroyed. The Paper Money gelding. Dollar Bill, which was recently turned out for a spell, suffered injuries while running in a paddock, and. it was found necessary to destroy him. Dollar Bill, while a member of J. S. Shaw’s team at Riccarton, showed some smart sprint form, but he had done nothing of note for some time. Prospeots Look Bright. Despite' a lean innings this season, T. R. George is likely to have one of the best years next term, as the stable contains some promising new material. In Peerless, the Beau Pere —Prestige filly secured at the sales toy Mr R. J. Murphy, he has one of the most promising youngsters Trentham has had for some years. First In 12 Months. ■Epris’s win in the Claremont Handicap was his first in the name of his owner, Miss T. Jackson, and his first since he beat a big field in the Winter Oats at Trenttham more than a year ago Racing last season in the colours of Mr A. L. Pratt, who held him on lease, the Shambles gelding was a fine galloper, but after finishing second to Queen Dorothy in the Belfleld Handicap at O.rari in September, he gradually retrogressed and had not again been in the money in more than 20 starts. Lady Hoarirl. Lady Hoariri, winner of the maiden event at Marton, two years ago gave some promise in filling minor plaolngs. She is a five-year-old daughter of Tanerlri’s brother Hoarirl, a useful sprinter himself a decade back, and she is owned and trained by Mr M. G Podjursky, of Wanganui. Lad} ‘Hoarirl was taken to the front within ; half a furlong and she stayed there [ Ilalf-way down the straight it looked as if the favourite would catch her, but she refused to yield and was goine as well as her challenger, though onl} a neck in front at the post. Valspear Replaced by Novice. The Spear Dance gelding Valspeai was sent home last week and will toe exercised around Ihe roads at Matamata toy his owner. He has been replaced in F. Stenning’s stable by Grand Dance, a rising three-year-old to} Spear Dance from Lady Marble, to} Marble Arch from Lady Esma, bj Gluten from Warbler, a daughter oi Gyrenian and Songstress. Grand Dance has only started once, running unplaced at the Bay of Plenty meeting last March. He is a half-brother tc Sir Archie and Dark Marble, resembling the former somewhat in conformation Trainer Fined. Tho Newmarket trainer Jack Jarvis was fined £SO by the Ascot stewards at the Royal Ascot meeting last month, The announcement states J. Jarvis was fined £SO for using abusive language ir the weighing room. The stewards were Lord Hamilton of Dalzell, the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl of Harewood and Sir Samuel Scott. The decision to fine Jarvis was the sequel \ to an incident that arose between the ; trainer and a jockey after one of the I most important races of the meeting, worm Keeping in ivuna. Mittie, who figures in the Camla Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, is also freely engaged in hack events at the Grand National meeting. She is a three year-old filly by Lacham from Horomea and is trained by her owner, W. 11. Hume, at Levin. It is several months since Mittie had a race, but she has evidently been shaping satisfactorily in her work, otherwise her owner would not have undertaken the trip to Riccarton. At tho Wellington summer meeting last January Mittie accounted for the 1 Apprentices’ Plate, seven furlongs, j from a strong field, several of whom have shown winning form since. Therefore her prospects at the ap- | proarhing meetings cannot be over- | looked. j A Sale-ring Bargain. ! Dulcedo, winner of tho Canterbury Handicap, nine furlongs, in Sydney a fortnight ago, was purchased by ‘his ! present owner ( Mr F. Hamilton) in I the Tamwortli sale ring for lOOgns I He had broken down and was thought to be useless for racing. Mr Hamilton. after tho purchase, sent, Dulcedo lo he trained by D. McKinnon at Newcastle. The trainer gave Dulcedo’s i swollen fetlock joint massage freatj ment, for some weeks, and finally had | him ready for solid training. In four starts for his new owner. Dulcedo has scored two wins and a second. When entries closed for Ihe big spring handicaps. Dulcedo was not considered for these events. His owner is satisfied to gain smaller prize money.
