POOLING FORECAST

BOBBY CALF TRADE. DAIRY COMPANY CONTROL MOOTED OVERLAPPING HANDLING WASTES. \ (Times Special Reporter;. •HIN U ERA, Thursday. In an explanation of recent developments concerning the botuby calf trade, when addressing the annual meeting of suppliers to the Hlnuera Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, Limited, to-day, Mr I J . R. Hawke, a director, forecast that some system of pooling, was likely to be Introduced next season. Several suppliers expressed confusion at the charges on the calf market this Mr Hawke said that prices ruling for bobby calves at the opening of the season were high. A slump oocurred, then prices suddenly rose again. The Matamata County Council had endeavoured to eliminate some of the over-lapping of collectors. At a meeting of the transport authorities in Auckland recently Mr Hawke suggested that the solution to the bobby valve problem was for the dairy companies to handle the animals from the farms to the works. It would be easy to extend co-operation in this direction. To the calf buyers, this suggestion had fallen as rather a bombshell. Costs Could Be Reduced. If the dairy companies and the Farmers’ Union co-operated, Mr Hawke believed that the cost of handling bobby calves could be reduced. "Next season I anticipate some scheme of pooling, then the competition among buyers on the road and the competition of carriers would be eliminated,” said Mr Hawke, adding that Mr E. J. Phelan, the No. 1 Licensing Authority, had asked the South Auckland Dairy Association to propose some such scheme. ‘‘ln my opinion it is too late this season for the dairy companies to do anything,” added Mr Hawke, who claimed that several bobby calf buyers would enter the market if the animals could be traded for at the works instead of through agents on the road Mr Hawke considered that co-ope ration among the dairy companies the Carriers’ Association, over tlm matter was essential. He was appointed to represent the Hinuera company at any negotiations which might be instituted.
