M. VAN ZEELAND’S MISSION KING LEOPOLD’S LETTER. BRITISH CABINET INTERESTED. (Official Wireless.) (Received July 29, 9.35 a.m.) RUGBY, July 28. In the House of Commons, answer to a recent letter from the King of the Belgians to his Prime Minister (M. Van Zeeland), on concerted economio study, Mr Anthony Eden said the Belgian Prime Minister undertook the mission of enquiry into existing world economic conditions, to which reference was made in the letter from the King of the Belgians, at the joint invitation of the French and British Governments. The British Government had, therefore, naturally read with great interest the suggestions made in the letter, a copy of which had been communicated to it by the Belgian ambassador, It is understood that M. Van Zeeland was about to set out the preliminary results of his inquiry, and, in view of this fact, and also the fact that the British Government has not so far been requested to furnish comments on the detailed suggestions made in the King of the Belgian’s letter, it was not advisable for him to comment thereon at present. Mr Eden added that the British Government warmly appreciated the ideals, inspired by King Leopold’s initiative and would approach the results of M. Van Zeeland’s preliminary inquiry with a desire to co-operate in any proposals which offered prospects of practical action.
