ARMED HOLD-UP?
YOUNG MAN CHARGED. SOME NAMES SUPPRESSED. WOMAN 'RECEIVES PROBATION. (By Telegraph—Pieas Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. “An armed hold-up Is a very serious offence and renders the accused liable to life imprisonment,” said DetectiveSergeant Doyle, opposing an application for bail in a case of three young men Jointly charged with being armed with a pistol and attemting to rob Fong Lee at Dunedin on July 3. The accused were:—Basil Ernest David Johnson-Barrett (22), a seaman; Maurice Bush (21), storeman; and Arthur Frederick Langford (19), i salesman. Barrett was also charged with breaking and entering the shop of Frank Boffa on July 16, and stealing £2 in money. Langford was charged jointly with another young man, whose name was suppressed pending trial, with the theft of £6, knowing that it was dishonestly obtained. A fifth young man, whose name was also suppressed pending trial, was charged with breaking and entering Boffa’s shop three days before Barrett was alleged to have entered It and with stealing £7 12s 6d. All were remanded to August 4.
A young woman, whose name was also suppressed, and whose case was. taken first, pleaded guilty to a charge be being idle and disorderly and was admitted to twelve months’ probation on condition she did not visit Dunedin and did not associate anywhere with her former associates. She was warned that if she did she would find herself in prison. Bail was refused to both Barrett and Langford.
