THE FIGHT FOR MADRID REBELS’ ONSLAUGHT. REPULSED BY THE LOYALISTS. United Press Assn.—Eleo. Tel. Copyright. (Received July 28, 11.20 a.m.) MADRID, July 27. After a terrific artillery barrage General Franco launched his fourth day’s onslaught on the
loyalist lines on the Villa Nueva and Brunete front. The loyalist anti-tank batteries eight times repelled tank attacks. The Moorish Infantry then went over the top, but were repulsed with 800 dead.

They admit that pressure obliged the Government forces to withdraw to the woods north of Brunete, where they are in a strongly fortified position dominating Villa Neuva de la Canada.
The insurgents claim to have inflicted thousands af casualties and to have destroyed 50 tanks.
At Salamanca the insurgents are reforming as a prelude to a further advance before the Government forces have time lo reform their lines.

The importance of continuing as one of the functions of the .League of Nations the international protection of refugees, was urged hv a deputation which was received to-day by Lord Cranhorne, Foreign Under-Secretary, who Is rapporteur on refugees to Hie League Council. The deputation, which was led by the. Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang, drew attention 'to the gr.vr anxiety felt by large sections of British public opinion owing to the proposal to close the Nansen International < mice for refugees at the end of 19J8.
