AMERICAN STRIKES

AUSTRALIANS’ EXPERIENCE

UNABLE TO ENTER HOTEL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. Sir George Wales, Lord Mayor of Melbourne, said in an interview today that he and Lady Wales were prevented by strike pickets at San Francisco from entering their hotel, where they had booked accommodation. They were not allowed even to collect correspondence and had to go elsewhere. The strike appeared to be due to differences between the unions. One wanted to assume control, but the other organisations were resisting its efforts, said Sir George. Many of the employees wanted to work under conditions which were entirely satisfactory to them but the union would not permit them to do so, a most extraordinary position.
