The airman was completing arrangements for his long-deferred flight around the world, which was originally announced for June last year. He flew the Pacific with Hugh Herndon in 1931, after having been arrested in Japan for having landed without a permit. With Rosco Turner, he came second in the Melbourne Centenary Air Race from England.
