POLAR AIR BASES.
UTILISATION OF TANKS. LINE ACROSS ARCTIC BASIN. (Times Air Mall. Service). LONDON. June 27. , Installation right across the Arctic ! basin of a chain of ardphlblan tanks ! was suggested fo-day by Professor ! otto Schmidt as a means of guidtng ' and refuelling trans-polar planes on , the projected air line to’ America, says j the Moscow- correspondent •of the Daily Herald. The tanks would be spaced at intervals of about 350 mile 3, and the chain would stretch from 'Pussia’s northernmost islands to Canada's Arctic outposts. Professor Schmidt credits his assistant She vale v with the idea, which is similar to that for floating aerodromes in mid-Atlantic. Drawback of “fixed” stations such as the present North Pole base is that they would so quickly drift off the air line route. But the amphibian tanks, which would be able to float in unfrozen sea and crawl over Ice-floes, would be able to travel to new positions. Each tank would be a portable laboratory, supply and fuel base, and repair shop, and would be equipped with a powerful radio to send out weather information. Professor Schmidt declares that the construction of the tanks presents no insuperable difficulties to designers.
