Democracy “The trouble about democracy,” urges the Irish Times, “is that, in the first place, it lacks colour; and, in the second place, it lacks that visible fount of authority which is so dear to the heart of youth. Democracy must fight for its existence against the specious allurements of ‘authoritarianism’ in the Faseist and ( ommunist States. It is a ereed for maturity, inasmuch as it demands a sense of responsibility and of balance which are not normal to youth. If it is to be preserved, it must be inculcated into the young people of Ihe still democratic States as part of their vital heritage—as a trnditjon to be maintained with pride and joy, not as a matter for apologies*” - - -
