POULTRY POINTERS.
ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESS. The man who makes a success at poultry-keeping must like his job and make time to attend to his birds. Feed laying birds at regular hours. Hen’s crops without good grit are like men's mouths without teeth. The gritless crops cannot do the necessary mastification. It is better to prevent trouble in poultry than to try to cure them. Movable perches ai'e more easily kept Clean from vermin than fixed ones. Equal parts of sulphur, lard and kerosene applied a few times will cure scaly leg. Unfertilised eggs keep longer than fertilised ones. A bird to manufacture eggs must have the machinery to do so. Changing a hen’s diet suddenly will check egg production and may force the bird into a moult. Keeping of Ducks. With Indian runners, keep one drake to six ducks. Keep the fowls supplied with a dust bath. Shade is necessary for ducklings, as they are sensitive to sunstroke. A supply of charcoal in the fowl house is beneficial. Dampness in a fowl house is the cause of many diseases in poultry. Avoid cracks in the perches. They only harbour vermin. A poor layer oonverts her food Into fat, a good layer into eggs. Activity in a bird is -one sign of a producer. Give the breeding pen plenty of exercise. Over-feeding with animal food causes leg weakness in chicks. Keep the drinking water away from the sun.
