WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

at motumaoho. The president. Mrs Lennan presided over the July meeting of the Motu maoho branch of the Womens Instl tute. Two new members were e '"Arrangements were finalised for a grand fancy dress ball to be held 'early in August. Several members.have offered prizes for best costumes and novelty dances. ...... Mrs Lennan was appointed link correspondent in place of Miss Giddy who has left the district. Mrs Gallichan, of Morrinsville, gave an interesting talk on the Island of. Jersey. Many, photos of buildings and views of the island were inspected and a vote of thanks to the speaker was passed with acclamation. Competition winners were as follows: Powder bowl, Miss D. Freegard; toilet set, Mrs .Tenner, three jars of jam. Mrs A. Squires; Child s garment from 1 yard of winceyette, Mrs Richards. All the entries for the two latter competitions are to be sent to the Campbell Johnstone ward at the Waikato Hospital together with a number of parcels of clothing and jam brought by members for the same purpose. The trading stall in charge of Mrs G. Baker and Mrs T. Stark did good Dusiness.

HUNTLY GROUP. WINTER MEETING. The winter meeting of the Iluntly group of Women’s Institutes took place in the Iluntly Town Hall recently. There was a very good attendance of country women, and the meeting proved very successful. The following Institutes comprise the group: Iluntly. Pukemiro, Rangiriri, Glen Afton, Waerenga, Naike, Te Kauwhata, Te Hoe, Ohinewai and Waiterimu. Mrs W. Jeffries (Waerenga) was chairman for the day and Mrs Read (Ohinewai) was convener. The meeting commenced with the Institute •ong, followed by a welcome to Hunt-

ly extended by Mrs Chisholm, president of the Huntly Women's Institute. The speaker for the day was Mrs McDonald, of Huntly, who gave a delightful travel talk, embracing the two San Francisco bridges, the Forest Lome memorial window, and food eaten by Americans. This was an Interesting feature of the meeting. Mrs Prenton, of Hamilton, Judged the competition tables of six specified kinds of needlework, and awarded first placb to Te Hoe. After lunch a programme of short plays was very much enjoyed, the following Institutes taking part: Waiterimu, Rangiriri, Te Hoe, Te Kauwhata and 'Ohinewai. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. AT WAITOA. The July meeting of the Waltoa branch of the Women's Institute was held in the local hall recently. Mrs W. A. Fleming presided in the absence of the' president. There was a very good attendance of members. I Mrs Graham gave a demonstration 1 of pewter work, great interest being shown by those present. The roll call “My favourite season” proved very amusing,. A competition for home-made wholemeal scones was won by Mrs C. Graham. The thought for the day was “Don’t brag—it isn’t the whistle that drive's the train.” A most enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with afternoon tea served by the hostesses for the day, Mesdames W. Wood. R. A. Johnston, L. O’Sullivan, and Miss J. Blomfield. AT TE UKU. The monthly me'eting of the Te Uku Women’s Institute was held In the Memorial Hall. Miss C. Moore, i After the usual business had been j dealt with members stood in silence : as a mark of sympathy with Mrs D’Ath J who had suffered a bereavement, j Mrs Colwell’s talk on “A Scotch j village” was very much enjoyed, as ; also was Mrs Gordon Dent's demon- ! stration of tapestry. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Checkley and Mrs F. Peart for making and icing the birthday cake. An interesting competition was won by Mrs Featherstonhaugh. The Roll of Honour competition re-

suited as follows: Bowl of violets, Miss McDonald 1, Miss Mead 2; sponge roll: Mrs Featherstonhaugh 1, Mrs D’Arth 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were, Mesdames Featherstonhaugh, Gardner, Cogswell, R. Johnstone and Miss Cogswell. Seventh Birthday Celebrated. The seventh birthday of the Te Uku Women’s Institute which was celebrated recently* was an outstanding success. The hall was prettily decorated by the Junior members in the Institute colours of green, and gold, greenery being festooned along the stage and walls. Messrs Gilmour’s Brothers orchestra from Raglan supplied excellent music. During the evening a play entitled ‘Postman’s Knock’ was given by members of the Institute, the cast being as follows: Betty Smith, Miss Phyllis D’Arth; Pamela Grey, Miss June Checkley; Miss Smyth, Miss Laura Lumsden; Mrs Attwell-Smith, Miss Lorna Lofroth; Miss Edith AttwellSmith, Miss Jean Mead; Miss Yclf, Mrs Siloock. A beautiful two-tiered cake made by Mrs Checkley and decorated by Mrs F. Peart was cut by the two youngest members of the Institute', Miss Laura Lumsden and Miss J. Dyke. Mr Murray Mead was M.C. A spot waltz was won by Mr F. C. Johnstone and Miss Corcoran and a novelty waltz by Mr D. Vernon and Mrs F. C. Johnstone. Two dressed dolls presented by Mrs A. Moon for competition were won by Mrs A. Bromwich and Mr Ray Edwards.

AT NQARUAWAHIA. SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY. The’ many members of the Ngaruawahia Women’s Institute and their friends who attended the Institute's sixth birthday party held in the Anglican Parish Hall on Wednesday spent a most enjoyable afternoon. The president, Mrs M. Loughr.an, presided and the arrangements for the afternoon were in the hands of a cap- j able committee and the secretary Mrs M. Prendergast. The president of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, Mrs Chapman, was present. In complimenting the members upon the enjoyable afternoon, she expressed pleasure at the number of the older members taking an active part in tho musical section of the programme. During the afternoon songs were given by Mrs W. Martin, Mrs A. Potter, Mrs E. Fuller, Miss Joan Wilson and Miss PL Starr; elocutionary Items by Mrs W. S. Fuller and Miss Betty Welch and a whistling solo by Mrs S. Mathers (Tauplri). A much enjoyed play “Pearly Gates" was given by members of the Ngaruawahia Institute, the players being Mrs Hammond, Mrs Bunn; her daughters, Monica. Mrs Tanfleld; Jean. Miss Joan Wilson; Aunt Aggie, Mrs James Harrop; Mrs Lamb (charwoman), Mrs M.

Loughnan; Violet Melrose, Mrs A. Menzies: Pearly Gates (Hollywood Star), Mrs M. Prendergast. A delicious afternoon tea was served, at the conclusion of which several presentations were made. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Loughnan by Mrs Walters, on behalf of the Taupiri Institute and to Mrs C. V. Little from the Ngaruawahia Institute. The past president and se'eretary, Mrs A. Wapp, and Mrs W. McCarthy were the recipients of small presentations from their institute. The birthday cake made by Mrs C. V. Little and decorated with coloured candles, which were lit by Mrs E. Fuller, one of the oldest members and blown out by Mrs R. Eyre, the first president, was cut by Mrs Chapman. Competitions were won by Mrs S. Mathers (Taupiri), Mrs Thorn (Taupiri), Mrs White (Ilorotiu), Mrs Rowe (Whatawhata), Mrs Walters (Taupiri) and Miss D. Kelm (Ngaruawahia Women’s Division). All expressed appreciation, on behalf of their Institute, of the enjoyable' afternoon. The singing of the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close. Those present included: Mesdames R. Eyre, H. B. Fraser, Chapman, Tanfleld, Sowman (Taupiri), S. Mathers (Taupiri), Starr (Horotiu), W. Martin, S. Clarke, J. Bruce, J. Murphy (Taupiri), D. R. Welch, Rowe (Whatawhata), Guy Marriott, G. V. Little, W. McGruer, J." Zimmerman, A. W. Spelrs, W. Johnson, J. T. Holt, Park, G. Pearson, W. Sherlock, W. McCarthy, J. C. Garrand, T. Gee, W. Blewden, Bunn, A. V. Cullen (Taupiri), T. McDowell (Taupiri), A. Allwill, G. Walters (Taupiri), R. Burrett (Taupiri), Sowerby (Taupiri). Misses Joan Wilson, G. Butcher, E. Starr, J. Henry (Taupiri).
