IMPORTED AYRSHIRES.

RECORD PRICES PAID. 390 GUINEAS FOR YOUNG BULL. Ayrshire breeders from every part of the Dominion were present at a sale of imported Ayrshire cattle in Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd.’s wool store, Pipitea Wharf, Wellington, on Tuesday. The six : head of imported cattle, live bulls and one heifer, were purchased by the j New Zealand Ayrshire Breeders’ Association in Scotland and were shipped from there eigiit months ago, coming to the Dominion via Canada. They were selected in Scotland on behalf of the association by the famous breeder, Mr A. W. Montgomerie, who should have every reason lo be satisfied with the reception the cattle were accorded in New Zealand. The heifer, Auchenbraln Crummie 28th, which was showing well forward In calf lo the great breeding bull, Lessnessock Sunny Jim, was the first lot offered. This magnificent heifer, one of the finest of the breed, brought keen competition from the Southland breeder, Mr A. M. Weir, and Mr Quentin Donald, Alloa, Featherston, Mr Donald paying 260 gns., a record price for a heifer of the breed sold in New Zealand. Offering of Bulls. Mr Weir and Mr J. G. Donald, Ardgowan, Featherston, clashed when the first bull was offered. This bull, Netherton Mahmoud, 18 months old, was sired by the famous Highland show champion, Lessnessock Double Cream, and his dam is one of the most noted producers in Scotland, having produced 641.32 lb. butterfat as a heifer. Mr J. G. Donald had to pay a record price for New Zealand to secure this bull, 390 gns. Competition was keen throughout, and the average for the six lots was just under 231 gns., easily a record for the Ayrshire breed. Messrs Wriglit, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., j acted as auctioneers on behalf of the j Ayrshire Cattle Breeders’ Association of New Zealand. The remaining | cattle, all of which were splendid types | and wilh great high butterfat backing, sold as follows:—Greenan Bondsman, 18 months old, by Netherton beau ideal, Mr W. Moore, Homebush, Masterton, 200 gns.; Aiuohenbrain Yellow Karyl, 17 months old. by Auehcnbrain Royal. Blood, Messrs T. M. and D. M. Thomson, Waiuku, Auckland. 170 gns.; Greenan Barascope, 16 months old. by Burton Butterfat, Mr W. C. Wallace, Cambridge, 160 gns.; Linnhead Magnet, 15 intlis' o,f l. Ij y Lessnessock Hiawatha. .Mr Nelson Tregca, Manaia, Taranaki, 205 gns.
