PRODUCE IN HAMILTON
SEVERAL LINES DEARER. EGGS IN BETTER SUPPLY. The market for produce in Hamilton continues to remain very firm and a slight hardening tendency is apparent. Cabbages have been dearer, hut cauliflowers eased after last week's rise. Lettuce were also cheaper, but pumpkins advanced in price. Celery was also dearer. Chief interest in the fruit section has centred in the heavy arrivals of Australian oranges, which have sold steadily. Delicious apples, ex cooler, have eased for cheaper grades. Fiji mandarins have been replaced by shipments from Australia, and these command good prices. Hothouse tomatoes are temporarily off the market. Quotations — Apples—Delicious, ex cooler, 5s to 8s 9d; Winesap, 7s to 9s: Ballarat. 8s fid to 9s. Oranges, Australian, 18s to 24s a case; Australian mandarins, 27s to 30s a case. Lemons, first grade, 18s to 22s 6d; household, 14s to 16s; others, 8s to 12s. Bananas, ripe and turning, 20s to 245. Pears, Winter Nells, 12s to 13s; Winter Coles, 13s to 15s; cooking, 8s to 9s. Marmalade oranges, choice, 8s to 9s Gd; others, 5s to 8s a case. Tree tomatoes, 7s to 8s; others, 5s to 7s. Vegetables—Pukekohe Savoy, 2s 6d to 3s 6d a bag; Drumhead. 4s to 5s a bag. Cauliflowers, 6s to 7s 6d a bag. South Island potatoes, £lO to £lO 10s a ton. Lettuce, 5s to 8s 6d a banana crate. New Zealand kumeras, 6s 6d to 8s 6d a sugar bag. Swedes, 2s 6d to 3s a sugar bag. Spinach, Is 6d a dozen bunches. Carrots, parsnips and leeks, Is 6d; beet, lOd to Is. Pumpkins, Pukekohe, 14s to 16s a cwt; others, 7s to 10s per cwt. Onions, 18s to 20s a cwt. Celery, choice, 3s to 3s 6d a bundle; others, Is 6d. Eggs and Fish. Eggs are coming forward in greatly increased supplies and have dropped a further 2d a dozen. 2s 6d being the ruling rate this week. It is expected that eggs will continue to drop rapidly for some weeks and next month should see eggs very much cheaper. Fish Is again scarce on the Hamilton market, the unsettled weather during the week resulting In small catches being available. The last shipment of Coromandel oysters will be forward next week and in the meantime supplies are low. Until the weather improves whitebait are likely to be unobtainable.
