FIRST MATCH
TOURING SPRINGBOKS.
GAME IN AUCKLAND. TO-MORROW’S BIG FIXTURE. The Springboks team will open thetr tour of the Dominion to-morrow at Auckland, when they will play the Auckland representatives. Never before has the Interest in a touring Rugby team been as strong as it Is over this tour, and for this match there ts sure to be a record crowd at Eden Park. In view of the fact that the Springboks will play the second match of their tour in Hamilton, against the Waikato-King CountryThames. Valley team next Wednesday, more than usual Interest in the game to-morrow will be taken by enthusiasts in this centre.
The Waikato Times, realising the Interest that will be taken In this match, has arranged for a complete coverage of the game for a special edition they will be publishing at about 5.30 on Saturday evening. Besides a description of the play, there will be over a column of comments on the play and the players. A forecast of how the team compares with the Combined team will also be included, and these special features will also be published with the eight o’clock edition. Will be Extended. The Auckland team is undoubtedly a strong one and the visitors will be fully tested, particularly as they are liable to be short of players to pick from, owing to Injuries. In the Auckland side, Bush, the full back, is well up to the highest standard of provincial full backs, while in the threequarter line Dick is well In the running for the All Blacks. The centre is new to most fans, but has played outstanding football this year, and is the type that improves with each match. With Killeen and Solomon in the five-eighths line the visitors will have to be at their best on defence, as both have the ability to cut in and open up brilliant movements. Their defensive qualities have been under suspicion at times, but on this ocoaston they should rise to the required heights. Frankham, at half, will give his backs as good a service as any back line could receive if he gets the ball, and be and Solomon should work in well together. Strong Forwards. The forwards will be good, with the public having another chance of seeing if Hadley is still the master at hooking that he used to be. Pearce and Pepper, who are with him in the front row, are very solid, hard workers, while Lockington’s return will be welcomed. Anderson has impressed this season, and F. Solomon Is a tactician who should be of material benefit to the team. He will have to use his weight In the scrums more than he has done of late. Hull and Lange, the other two forwards, are heavy and fast, but there are more than a few people who would like to see the speedy Brown'lncluded In the forwards. The Auckland team Is as follows, but the Sprinbgoks side has not yet been announced:— Full back—R. G. Bush (University). Three-quarters—J. Dick (Grafton), A. T. Prentice (Grafton), lv. Byerley (Technical). Five-eighths—B. A. Killeen (Grafton), D. Solomon (Ponsonby). Half back—W. Frankham (Ponsonby). Front row—T. H. Pearce (Manukau), W. E. Hadley (Maclst), C. S. Pepper (Manukau).
