Viscount Bledlsloe, in opening the Earl Meath Room of the Royal Empire Society, remarked that the Union Jack was much more revered than when Earl Meath, who founded Empire Day, had to fight to get it flown. The South African Government proposed when Viscount Bledlsloe was Governor-General of New Zealand that Governors-General flying a special flag replacing the Union Jack. Viscount Bledlsloe adversely commented to His Majesty on the suggestion, but the arrival of the new flags anticipated the reply. Viscount Bledlsloe put them In a cellar and told the Prime Minister, who said that Viscount Bledlsloe might expect a mutiny If he flew a flag other than the Union Jock. “As far as I am aware that bundle of flags still lies unregretted in the Government House cellars at Wellington,” he said.
