PACIFIC SHIPPING.
lIIIIIDY PROPOSAL. ‘._ ...-‘— W'ILL DOMINIONS JOIN? _._... Ulmod Press Assn—Else. 'l'el. Copyright. LONDON, June 3. The Daily Mail, in announcing that Mr Edward Beatty, chairman and president or the Canadian Pacific Rail—way since 1918, will shortly participate in the Pacific shipping discussions in London, says it is believed in British shipping quarters that Canada. Australia and New Zealand would be willing to consider providing quotas of a £250,000 subsidy if the British Government adopt such a policy, and it. is understood that Fiji would flnInciaiiy support the scheme. If Mr fiunriman, president or the Board of Trade, could gain British support for n subsidy a plan would be quickly evolved.
The Daily Herald in a leader says: " It is impossible to read without disgust that British shipping in the Paciflu is in imminent danger of elimination by the United States lines. Nobody likes subsidies much, but it would be unwise to rule out the possibility that it may be desirable to meet the situation by a counter—subsidy, If British lines are driven out then the United Ststss lines would be free to increase the heights."
