COUNCIL OF WOMEN

HAMILTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the National Council of Women was held in the Lyceum Club rooms on Tuesday evening, the president, Dr. de la Mare, presiding. After routine business had been dealt with the president welcomed Mrs E. Whittaker and Mrs V. R. Crow—hurst, as new associate members of the branch. Mrs J. R. Fow, and Mrs C. A. Barrel], were elected honorary associate members. The president stated that arrange—ments were well in hand regarding the public address to be given by Miss Edger, on “Ways to World Peace,” on Monday next, and expressed the hope that there would be a good attendance. I.C.W. Convention at Belgrade. The hon. secretary reported that arrangements were being made for a collection of art and craft work from the Hamilton centre, to be forwarded illl‘ougl‘l the Dominion Convener for arts, crafts and letters, to the I.C.W. Convention, which is to be held at Belgrade in October. The collection would consist of works typical of New Zealand. _

An extract from the newspaper regarding the attitude taken up by the Auckland branch of the Farmers' Union regarding the serious social evil of drinking at public dances, was iread to the meeting. It was decided that the Hamilton branch of the N.CW. should support the following resolution, passed by the Auckland branch of the Farmers’ Union at its last meeting:— “That as drinking at public dances

is fast becoming- a serious social evil, the Government be urged to adopt measures to prevent intoxicating drink being used at dances.” A copy of this resolution is being forwarded to the Dominion headquarters of the N.C.W. with a request that they give the resolution their support and deal with the matter as they think fit. The next monthly meeting will be held on July 7, at 8 pm.
