PAYMENT FOR CHEESE

WELCOME ANNOUNCEMEAT _— STABILISING OF INDUSTRY. .\[h Li. J. PARLANE‘S OPINION. The announcement that a margin of lid per Ib. hunt-rm: in favour of cheese oyer butter will he paid suppliers of rheese factories under the Um‘crtnnent‘s guaranteed price scheme \\'ill be welcomed by rhecsc factory directorates. \\'hen the outline of the guaranteed price scheme was made known resolutions were sent to the Government from the dairy conference in Wellington urging that the preferential payment for Cheese be at least Md and these resolutions were suppOl'lt‘d at subsequent meetin‘S-S throughout the nonunion. The margin will help to stabilise the cheese industry, said Mr (J. J. Parlanc. general manager of the New Zealand Uu-opet'aih‘e hair)~ Company, yesterday morning. During the past several years the diflerence in payment bB— hutterrat for cheese manufacture and butteri’at for butter manu~ raciure has not been sufficient to inriuec farmers to supply to cheese factories, in fact there has been a cer—tain swing-over to butter factories. The position was fast becoming serious for the reason that in the event of cheese factories closing dovm, the capital invested would be lost to the individual shareholders. whilst the change-over would increase the production of butter, thus increasing marketing dimcullies in respect of that product. He expressed the opinion that the differential price announced by the Assistance Director of Marketing was considerably higher than the margin that had been available to cheese suppliers over the last eight or ten years and he anticipated that it would result in farmers supplying cheese {actories receiving a payment. at least equivalent that that on butter-fat for buttermaking when the by-produut was taken into account.
