' A RATEPAYER’S PLEA. ALDERMAN BECOMES POETICAL. A ratepayer of Hunter’s Hill wanted to have a footpath repaired, and put his appeal into verse, says a Sydney paper. Here is his plea (which has met a successful response): Dear Mr Mayor and aldermen: You’re asked to morning- tea One Sabbath (please select your own), That you may come and see Our Auburn Street (West Ward), you know— A quiet little street, Where once we had a tarred footpath For our suburban feet; But since you gave us our new road The footpath’s lost its way In subterranean wanderings. And we’re 111 led with dismay, For now that name's wheels have lift The basalt from its lair. It makes the roadway where we walk A thing or deep despair. Our pilgrim root must daily tread This avenue <>r woes, Where two-edged flints lie passively in wait for martyred toes. Or course, we know your council's Ills. That you've not too much cash; But we‘would all he satisned ! With Just some tar and ash. To take our ways to future bliss And save our blistered reet. So please come down; I'm sure you’ll all Bo pleased to meet our street. Alderman’s Reply Ono of the aldermen composed the following- reply, which he will forward to the ratepayer; Your plaintive song of Ills and woes Mas caused us all to sob. We shudder at .vour blistered toes, And won’t neglect tlie Job. ?.o on some future Sabbath inorn. With tar. sackcloth and ash. We ll search Tor that tarred footpath And we’ll not spare the cash. But ir you want it soon to be - t Mark the aldermen’s cheer; • - Then please cut out the morning tea; Our Hobby still is beer.
