WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
AT EUREKA. The members of the Eureka Women’s Institute celebrated the third anniversary of their inauguration in the Eureka Hall recently. There was a large attendance of local and visiting members, Morrinsville, Hillcrest, Tauwhare, Gordonton and Motumaoho Institutes being well represented. The president, Mrs Masters, welcomed the visitors, Mesdames Harris and Mathers acting as ushers. A very pleasant social afternoon was spent in competitions and items. Mesdames Saxton (Gordonton) and Gallighan (Morrinsville) were the winners of the competitions. Miss Hills of Te Pahu gave a very interesting talk on Rhodesia, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mesdames Masters and Harington gave a splendid reading entitled “The Perfect Marriage.” The afternoon tea tables were decorated with bowls of pink and gold chrysanthemums. The birthday cake was given by Mrs Mathers, and beautifully iced by Mrs Cress-well. Mesdames Mathers and Young (the oldest members of the institute) and Hunter (the past president), assisted / in the cutting of the birthday cake and representatives from each of the visiting institutes returned thanks. The president was the recipient of a beautiful pink and gold cushion from | the Hillcrest institute. The president and secretary were also presented with bouquets made by Mrs Young. The singing of “God Save the King” closed a very enjoyable afternoon. i AT HOROTIU. There was a large attendance of members of the Horotiu Women’s Institute at a farewell afternoon given for one of its members, Mrs M. E White, who is leaving the district. Competitions were won by Mrs M. E. White and Mrs W. H. Martin, and items were given by Mesdames W. H. Martin and S. Starr, Misses E. Speirs, E. Starr, B. Tidmarsh and M. McPherson. A dainty afternoon tea was served after which Mrs Moynahan, the president, in a short speech, asked Mrs White to accept on behalf of the members a handsome rose bowl. Mrs White feelingly replied and was accorded musical honours. AT WHITEHALL. The monthly meeting of the Whitehall Women’s Institute was held at Mrs Craig’s residence, when there was an exceptionally good attendance of members. Opportunity was taken to farewell Misses Mary and Margaret Taylor, who have been members for three years and who are leaving to take up j their residence in Walton. Mrs Gardiner demonstrated the making of rag wool mats. The roll call was “a quick pudding,” and the competition, “the three best onions ■ grown by a member.”
