AUSTRALIAN SENATOR’S PLAN. “To further the exchange of international thought,” Senator Macartney Abbott (U.C.P., N.S.W.), in the Senate at Canberra, urged the calling of a world-wide conference to introduce au international language to be taught in every school in the world. Senator Abbott said lie envisaged a lime 15 or 20 years lienee when the youth of the world would be able to turn on the radio and listen to and understand international broadcasts, "and so be able to appreciate the viewpoint of the other fellow." “If this could be achieved it would lead to a greater measure of international co-operation,” he said. “We must have a common understanding between nations. The Prime Minister of Japan lias publicly slated that the lack of a common language is llie chief cause of war,” he added. Legislation in New Zealand. Senator Abbott said he had discussed the matter with members of the New Zealand Parliament, and the Prime Minister had assured him that a motion dealing with the matter would be introduced in the New Zealand Parliament. He added that a motion which he intended introducing into the Senate at a later date would -specify that the Prime Minister be requested to communicate with the Governments of the United Kingdom, the Dominions and India, seeking their co-operation.
