CONDITIONS IN AUSTRALIA. ’ INDUSTRIAL IMPROVEMENTS. _— “The latest statistics received andl ' covering the past nine months show a gratifying improvement in the Commonwealth primary Industries mainly dependent upon the export market.“ said Mr James Payne. of Wellington. assistant Austmiian trade commissioner, in an Interview with a Waikato Times representative to-day. The rise in the price of wool, as had happened in New Zealand. had exceeded all previous ex—pectations. he added. The average price !or dairy produce had been hetter. and a reasonably satisfactory market had followed for export sup—plies or beef. mutton and lamb. 'l‘he favourable price movement had also been extended to minerals. Mr Payne said there was no doubt that the primary industries had suffered severely during the past five years. but it was also beyond doubt Hint the national resources of the Commonwealth had been freely used to relieve the condition at certain of the primary industries. \\'ith the object of securing greater emeienoy. notable work was being done by the Council‘ or Seientiflo and Industrial Research in ‘ the breeding and treatment or stock and plants, the control 0! pests and diseases. and in methods or food pre-‘ servation. and the carriage or perish-l alhle goods overseas. "In tracing the industrial progress of the secondary industries in Australia during the past five years the figures are both illuminating and informative," he continued.
