ORDER OF MERIT.
HONOUR. 0F EX-PREMIER. MR RAMSAY MACDONALD. LOND‘ON. May 3. The first birthday honours of King Edward VIII is now being drawn up, says the Sunday Chronicle. The list will be comparatively short, as the King is likely to reserve the majority of the honours he wishes to bestow for his Coronation List next year. It is understood, however, that His Majesty will probably confer the or~ der of Merit on Mr Ramsay MacDonald—one of the highest honours in the gift of the Sovereign. Both Mr R. B. Bennett, former Canadian Premier, and Mr S. M. Bruce of Australia, are likely to be raised to the peerage in recognition of their great services to the Empire. Sir Godfrey Collins, Secretary for Scotland, is expected to become a peer. Mr Hore-Belisha may be knighted as a. reward for his work as Minister of Transport, while Dr. E. L. Burgin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, and Captain H. Margesson, the Chief Government Whip, are also being mentioned as likely new knights.
