EVEN OOHTMer. ROVERS DEFEAT FRANKTON. (Times Representative.) TE AWAMUTU, Sunday. A fast exciting game, notable for its rapid scoring, was played at Albert Park, Te Awamutu, yesterday, when Rovers (Te Awamutu) met Frankton and gained a narrow victory by 25 points to 24. With the scores following in rapid succession and the play fluctuating quickly throughout, the issue was in doubt right up till the Jlnal whistle. The teams lined out as follows: — Rovers. —Vincent, Irwin, Young, Wilson, Quinn, Jackson, Owens, Fell, Shepherd, A. Thomson, T. Thomson, Spence, Holmes, Willis, Hinton. Frankton. —Ferguson, Griffiths, Denz, Keeps, Jones, Snodgrass, Pearson, Hall, Tristram, Steere, Gilmer, Davies, Sklenj ars, Paget, Glasgow, j Rovers played hard from the open- | ing and in the first few minutes they j had Frankton adopting defensive measures. However, the visitors had ; a turn at attack and a* penalty in a , handy position gave Denz a chance eU j goal and he made no mistake with the kick. i Frankton 3 Rovers 0 ; Fast retaliatory tactics by Rovers j seemed destined to avenge this set- ■ back and Young made- a spectacular j dash down the line only to be pulled ; down a few yards from home. The i local team kept on battling and gave i Frankton a busy time in their own 25, j their efforts resulting in Young kick- | ink a splendid penalty goal against the wind from well in. j Rovers 3 Frankton 3 Almost immediately a surprise attack by Rovers saw Shepherd in possession and he wont most of the way on his own. Rovers lost little time on resumri—tion and went away almost immedi’ ately. Frankton found relief in a force. Nevertheless Rovers kept at it and held Frankton well back in their I own territory. Rovers ......-...... 15 Frankton ............ 18 From a penalty in the mid-field Young took R chance at. goal but, his klok fell short and Rovers carried on int-o foreign territory. The Fraukton forwards soon turned defence into at—tack and had Rovers on their guard. Vin-cent made a ihrighi, run down the line, turning the tables on the oppo—sition in a spectacular manner. How—ever, his dash was halted before he became too dangerous, but the following play saw Frankton force once again. A period of play in neutral territory followed and hard battling in the forwards was the predominating fea—ture until Griffiths gained possession and made the most spectacular run of the game to go over near the corner. Rovers "...-mm... 15 Most of the ensuing play was in Rovers‘ favour and although Frankton pushed them back to neutral territory several times they were notto be de—nied and from a melee near the line Quinn went across for a try. The spectators were provided with another thrill when Griffiths broke through and looked likely. Vincent, however, came into the rpicture regain and helped to reverse the order. ‘ Once again the territorial advantage remained with Rovers and Frankton; were hard put to keep the invaders‘ back. Their efforts were of no avail for, from a line-out near the line, Ir—win oollected and added further to the score. The Second Spell. The second spell saw United immediately on the attack. and from a scrum Coulter secured, to, hand to Hammond, who scored in the corner. Tile kick at goal failed. A surprise rhino when K. Peake cut in to heat the defence and hand to Miller, who scored brilliantly.
