WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT MATANGI. The monthly meeting of the Matangi Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Whewell presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the reciting of the institute creed, after which a large file of correspondence was dealt with. The roll call, “Your christian name or one you prefer,” caused much amusement. Mrs Cameron read a most interesting report on the half—yearly conference held at Hamilton, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A memory competition was won by Mrs J. Taylor. Miss Whewell gave a demonstration of starching a gentleman’s evening shirt and collar, which all the members found very interesting and in‘structive. A competition for a jar of pie-melon jam was won by Mrs H. Thompson, with Mrs Shaw second. Good business was done at the trading table. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Banks and A. McLennan. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. FENGOURT BRANCH. There was a good attendance at a meeting;r of the Fencourt \Vomen's In—stitute held in the hall recently, Mrs Shaw presiding. | An invitation was received from the Cambridge branch of the \V.D.F.U. l to their birthday party, and also from the Maungatautnri Institute. Four members were appointed to attend a meetingr to be held in Cambridge on Illay 22, for the purpose of arrang—ing details for a wool display to be held (luring Jubilee \\'cek. It was decided to purchase community song'books for re-salo tn the members. Next month the trading table. will take the form of a “bring; and buy” stall in aid of the institute funds. Mrs Leslie Crane, dietitian, \\'rote offering to lecture to the members and if arrangements can be made with her, she will be present at the next meeting on June 11. Mrs Shaw gave a report on the council meeting held in Hamilton recently. and Mrs Tierney moved a hearty vote of thanks to her. The winners of the competitions were: Madeira cake. The May meeting of the Hiiiuera Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs (‘. \\'ilson. about forty mom—hcrs lining; present. It was decided that the play reading circle should

Brown, on behalf of the committee, presented Miss White with a dainty posy, and Mrs Wilson spoke in glowing terms of the guest of honour’s work as an Institute member and} wished her every happiness for thel future. While the parcels were being ‘ opened a competition was held, the winner being Mrs J. Calder. The hostesses were Mesdames W, Hollis, H. Settle, W. Sweetman and A. Rowe. 1 AT GLEN MASSEY. The monthly meeting of the Glen Massey VVomen’s Institute was held last week in the Glen Massey Hall. There was a good attendance and two new members were enrolled. A num—ber of articles was brought for the Court at the Waikato Winter Show. A competition for the best thrift article not to cost more than one shil—ling brought a large number of entries. This Was won by Mrs J. Connew junr., with a tea cloth made from a flour bag: and beautifully hand—worked. All these entries were given for the institute court. The best design for the tea cloths to be used at institute meetings was won by Miss D. Trew. One of the institute members is in hospital and the president is to visit her. A Post Office money box was pre—sented to an institute baby. The cookery book bong-ht for the first mem—ber to become a bride was presented to Mrs A. Brockett junr. Arrangements were made for the annual dance. A competition, the proceeds of which are to buy a dinner wagon for use at meetings, was won by Mrs R. Lees. AT TE UKU. The monthly meeting of the Te Uku Women's Institute was held on May :31 in the Memorial Hall. Mrs Moore presided over a fair attendance of members. A report, of the \Vaikato conference was read by Miss. Chockley, and a very interesting talk on India and its inhabitants was given by Mr Zi--1111111.
