SOCIALIST TREND
MR COATES AND LABOUR. “01-EVER PROPAGANDA.” (By Telegraph—Press Ansoetntlon.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. “I think you have a Very thorough—going socialistie programme," said the Right lloni J. G. Coates at a complimentary gathering: tendered to Mr J. N. Massey, formerly member for Franklin, at Waiuku last night. . .\lr Coates emphasised four pomts, first. the socialisation of credit, seeand, the country‘s production, third, the control of industry and centralised organisation dominated by trades union secretaries, and fourth, unlimit« ed credit. ‘ He believed the trend in politics had been brought about by very clever Propaganda which convinced the peo—ple that there was starvation in this land of plenty. Instead New Zealand was the happiest country in the world. Everything would be gained by giTing the people freedom to develop their own industries. The alternative was socialism and every individual giving his services to the State. “Our people have shown themselvesto be attracted by untried theories," said Mr Goates. He estimated that 5135.000,000 was available for the Government to call upon from the reserves of large financial institutions. The result must be a curtailment 01’ credit. “This country with tremendous ex— DOFIS and a small population cannot artificially raise prices Very much above world levels," declared .\lr Coetes. Referring to compulsory unionism, Mr Coates said those who would benefit most in times of rising prices would be the employers.
