HOUSING PROBLEM.
GREAT SHORTAGE SHOWN. i WELLINGTON, Thursday. ‘ The Hon. w. Nash, Minister of Fin‘ance, in moving the. second reading 0! the State Advances Corporation Bill in the House last night stated: “There is no doubt that there is a. shortage of between 16,000 and 20.‘OOO houses in the Dominion, which ‘means that there are as many families which are not properly housed. Some ‘membems know how that position is ‘heing exploited.“ He did not think the ‘members of the House realised the ‘tragic nature of the problem. i The Hon. A. Hamilton (Opposition—iWeJlaee) stated it was a social duty ito provide adequate housing for the people. He referred to the valuable work ‘heing done by the building societies and he commended this to the Minister when framing his house pol-‘i-cy. He also referred to rising costs in the building industry as a result of recent legislation. It was estimated, he said, that the labour cost in a. house was something like 80 per cent. vend he believed housing would test the Government so far as the keeping down 01‘ costs was concerned,
