ALLEGED SLY-GROG.

BOTTLES 0F BEER BOUGHT. STOREKEEPER INDIGTED, A plea of not guilty was entered by Hannah Joseph iiuhib. storekeeper, of I)ronui. when he appeared before Mr Justice Fair and a Jury in the Supreme Court at Hamilton to-day to face two Pharges or selling liquor without a license. The , prosecution was con—ducted by Mr H. T. Gillies and the accused was represented by Mr E. Roe (Rotorua). Frank James Harcock. labourer. of Oro_nui. stated that on receiving his pay cheque for £4 17s 6d on April 22. he visited the accused's premises, purchasing several bottles of beer at 25 Gd each. The liquor was supplied by the accused and his wife. At a“) pm. he was asked outside by a man named Boyd. who stated that witness owed ilim a dv‘i-t. \N‘itness denied the charge and hat; been assaulted by the other man on stating that .he did not have any money in his possession. Witness received injuries which necessitated medical attention. \Vitncss said he returned to the ac—cused‘s house and purchased six bottles 01‘ ale and stout, portion of which he consumed in the building while. on the following.r day, he obtained another two bottles from a Maori girl in the accused‘s house. Later he had a “shilling nip" and a “double header" of gin from Hahih himself. Witness said he then accompanied a cons-table to Taupo to have his in—jured head dressed and he had noticed that liquor was placed in the car. At a later stage the accused had apnroached him and asked him to affirm that it was home-brew he was drinking. but witness said he had refused to periure himself. (Proceeding)
