IMPORTANCE OF SKIRTING. ADDRESS AT WINTER SHOW. j In an address at the Waikato Winter Show r yesterday, Mr W. G. Marks, a well-known Auckland wool ! expert and a member of the staff of ■ Messrs Dalgety and Company, spoke on the treatment of wool in the shed j and the importance of skirting, j Mr Marks stated that a great deal ! of New Zealand wool was spoilt by the presence of bidi-bidi. To skirt j this type of wool it was advisable to ! spread the fleece out. on the table. : and run along the edges, removing all undesirable pieces. Having rid the wool of the skirtings, the next proi cedure was to turn in the edges of ! the fleece and make sure no other parts required attention. | The speaker then displayed a fleece which, if skirted, would ruin the ' quality of the wool, there being so much inferior material in it. A woolbroker could advise the farmer as to whether his wool was worth skirting, j Bellies were mostly used on the ! Continent, and second class wool was ' employed in the manufacture of carpets. Wool for commercial purposes should be treated for the re- ■ quirements of the buyers. j Mr Marks stated that Japanese buying would increase to a great extent during the next few' years, but they w-ould never be willing to take unclassed or unskirted wool. Canada, Australia and America wanted good w r ool, whereas unskirted sorts could find a market at Bradford, but only at an Inferior price. It was worth following the example of growers who had been successful with their wool concluded the speaker.
