Dur—ing the morning the roads -were little busier than normal. Heavy clouds and a chilly wind made it. an overcoat Derby. There were fewer Gipsies to be seen on the downs. They are fast disappearing. The Derby is becoming more select every year. After lunch. the crowd, believed to he a record. stretched in solid mass from Tattenham Corner to the grandstand. The Derby was a magnificent ruro, Mahmoud‘s time being a record. The jockey, Charlie Smirke. does not know the meaning of nerves and dis—played superb coolness and judgment. ‘lie did not attempt to force the pace. Garioca was early away and led at the half-mile i'rom Midstream and Pay Up. Thankerton stole the lead down the hill from Bela Hisssr and Pay Up and was three lengths ahead into the straight but was unable to stay. Mah—moud shot up, 'l‘aJ Akbar gallantly attempting to overhaul his stable companion but Mahmoud won easily. The crowd in frenzied excitement cheered the Aga Khan, who led in the beautiful grey horse which Is only the third of that colour to win the Derby.
