Bruce Levy, 0! the Plant Research Station. Palmerston North. addressing the annual conference or the Auckland branch or the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers' Association in Hamilton. Mr Levy stressed that the research had been carried out under a cooperative system and was probably one of the best co-ordinated investi—ations yet undertaken. it had been sV‘tdod tnto two main sections. field work being performed in the \Vnikato in conjunction with the .\iorrinsvilie. New Zealand and Te Awamutu Gooporatlvo Dairy Companies. and at the Massey Agricultural College by the Dnlry Research Institute and the Pasture Research Section of the Plant Banach Station. Points Mods Olear. _ A number of points had been made olnr by the investigations The more grassy the farm the loss was the feed flavour, while the opposite result held good in regard to ciuvery land. The worst {arms tor feed flavour were the lower producing properties rather than those of higher production, and it had been found that the night cream was much more strongly. iiuvoured than the morning's cream. This was definitely associated with the time before milking that the feed was fed. Control on the form would appear to centre around pasture improvement. coupled with herdJnanagement and regulation of flavour-producing feeds tour hours prior to milking. The factory must assume a high degree or responsibility in the elimination of flavours in processing methods. and it was for the industry as a whole to decide in what way money could best be spent in this direction. Emcient control would probably be partly on the farm and partly in the factory, but at present it would appear that the factory. for some time at least. would play the biggest part in eliminating the feed flavours. Service at Morrlnflille. Outlining the work for the coming year, Mr Levy said that. the detailed work at Morrlnsyiiie would be continued for a third year as a confirma—tion test. The Fields Division and the Plant Research Division were to undertake manuriai experimenls on certain paddocks to test the most ctlicieut manuring and stocking to bring about pasture improvement.
