' Mainland has been moving along attractively or late and should strip in good order for engagements ahead. He is entered in the second division of the Jervois Handicap and on the mini—mum must be conceded prospects. Saltopny. While he failed in both his engage—ments at the \Vaikato meeting Saltspray should not lightly be ruled out of calculations for the Penrose Hurdles on Saturday. The raring he had here should improve him and he may be seen to better advantage at Elleralie. ‘ Gloollle. Gascille impressed in a schooling bout of the big Ellerslie fenoes the other day and is in splendid i‘ettle for engagements at the approaching Great Northern meeting. , On Saturday he is entered for the Green Lane Steeple—chase and should make a hold show—ing.

He has been allotted a solid poundase in the open sprint on Saturday at Ellerslle, but for all his 10.1 he should make a bold showing. '

m GAY ROSE. > any Rose. who ran second to Lord Vol In the cornwall Handicap last year, has been working along well of late and should strip in good tattle for "9" Onclooment In this season's “9 mile and a quarter. Her best performance this year perhape was her fine third In the Inter Handicap when she flnlched fast from the rear to Join the placed dlvl—slon. Ao‘ain'she finished well at Avondale last month to beat all but Scotland. ~——_—_.—__ High Tea. High Tea was bricked and honten in both his essays at the rcccnt VVnikato meeting, but it should not he long he—fm‘e he makes amends. lie went a very creditable race on the second day here and with "1.13 should not fail in make his presence felt on Saturday in the second division of the Jervois Handicap. Black Thread. Black Thread‘s success on the first day at Te Rape will claim him a strong following for the second division of the Jervois Handicap on the opening day of the Great Northern meeting at Ellersiie. “Vith 8.1 he is handily weighted for the part and there is no doubt as to his present physical ill--ness. Will Be Hard. .\lodern Maid's exhibition in the \Vaikato llurdles on Monday was her best to date and one withal that suggested further success for the Little England mare. She has been rehandicapped 41b for the Penrose Hurdles on Saturday and in her present condition she may prove the hardest to dispose of. Chance- of Motor-u. Metoru has been racing consistenli’ of late and with the handy impact of 7.11 in the first division of the Jervois Handicap on Saturday he will have to be talren Into account. in the summlng up. He won well at Te Awamutu and after running second on the first day here was not produced on the second day of the meeting. ‘ Imperial Prlnoe. Prior to the Waikato meeting Imperial Prince had been schooling im—pressively at 'l‘e Rspa but. he was not produced on either clay of the, gather—ing. although he appeared among the acceptance list for either day. On Saturday he is entered for the Green Lane Steeplechase at. Ellersile and in View of the way he was shaping: here his showing at Auckland will be the subject of interest. Scotch Nation. Scotch Nation's hurdling experience certainly has not been very extensive. but there is no doubt about his jump—imz ability. lle had his first race over hurdles at. the Pam-0a meeting in March and in his next. essay over the‘ nhstaclcs, at Ellcrslie last month, he‘ won (lavish-Ply from King .\lestnr and \'lctnr (Inlima. The experience he has had in the hunting field has stood to him and his fine showing over a milr: and a qunrlcr on the flat here the first day was indicative of his present splendid flincss. lie is the ruling favourite for Saturday‘s art-at Nnrlhm‘u llurdlcs and he should take a lot of healing. -

Prince of Orange. Prince of Orange was anything but impressive in his engagements at T 0 Reps. but it would be wise not to overlook the fact that he does not appreciate left—handed going. lie has run his best, races at. Elierslie and it will he Interesting to note how he shapes in his engagements at the Great Northern meeting. Prior to' the \Vaikato meeting he has beeni scholing well in his trials over the] obstacles. Llon Heart. i Lion Heart's success on the first! day or the “'aikato meting was onei of the most impressive of the fixture] and with ordinary luck in the running of the second division 0! that Jervois Handicap he should go a long; way towards repeating the measure} The most encouraging feature of that: performance last Saturday was the way he was sticking to his work at the completion of the mile distance after setting the pace for over six furlongs. Pukeko. After winning well on the first day the Masterton-tratned Pukeko was decidedly unlucky not to add to his re—cord on the second day of the fixture when. after receiving none the best of the start he was running over everything in the straight to tinish close up on the heels of the placed division. On Saturday, in the first division of the Jervois Handicap, he will hate his chance to make amends. He will certainly lack nothing on the score of condition. Diamond. On his showing in the King Country Steeplechase on the second day of the \Vaikato meeting Diamond must he conceded good prospects in the summing up of the Green Lane Steeplechase on Saturday. His exhi—bition here was an impressive one and while he has yet to prove himself as a genuine stayer. iii-s fencing ability and speed on the flat commends his claims to consideration. He appears to be coming right again and should be all the better for the racing he had here. ___—__._._._.__

ALLEGRETTO. ‘ Allegretto was havlng only hla second race over country when he contested the Melvllle Huck Steeplechaee here on Monday and 'the quallty of Ms success demenatrated th-t he wlll add to hle laurel. before the Jumplng eeuon oloeee. Recently he ha. been hunted and It was that unquestlonably that stood to hlm at Te Rape. In the Green Lane Steeplee on Saturday at Ellerelle It wlll be a m. horse that beats hlm.

_..—.—‘——’————— Jolly Beggar. A fine stayer and a Jumper of proved ability it should take a good one to heat Jolly Beggar in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday. ’the {not that he screwed his last fence rather badly when he won here the first day may have cost him some caste, but it is said of last year's Grand National winner that it is an old habit of his; which is counteracted by his oleveri Jumping. When he won 'hcre‘ lasti Saturday he impressed by the manneri in which he finished on and he will claim a strong following when he goes into the sinrier's hands this week. Lo Chastour.
