GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS.
The Great Northern meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will open at Elleralie on Saturday. 6howlng of Boughal. Boughal failed to make any impression on his Held in the open six on Monday at Te Rapa. He drew fairly wide out at the barrier, however, and this did not assist his chances. Finished Fast. Benighted was finishing on attractively over the very deciding stages of the Waikato Hurdles on Monday and he gave the impresion that had he made his run a trifle earlier lie would have given Modern Maid more trouble than he did. Won In Attractive Style. Le Grand won the Farewell Hack on Monday at Te Rapa in attractive atyle coming from well back at the foot of the straight to mow down the opposition in the straight. The son of Posterity and Eulogy is an attrac-tive-looking colt and more should be heard of him in the weeks ahead. Ran Consistently. Velocipede ran two consistent races at the Waikato meeting and in view of his attractive performance on the first day it was surprising that he was at such generous odds on the respective machines. Ninth fancy in the betting he returned a good price for a place. Dloquedoon Disappoints. Dlacquedoon’s showing in the Hack Steeplechase on the second day was a disappointing one and he appears to lack the confidence he showed early In his schooling efforts at Te Rapa. Racing may overcome the trouble as he has demonstrated in the past that he possesses ability to fence correctly. The post and rails proved his Waterloo on several occasions prior lo the meeting and he has never fenced with the same confidence from then on.
One Whetu. Although the best he could manage was a good third to Grateful and Velocipede, One Whetu was responsible for a meritorious performance in the Gordonton Handicap on Monday. He had to come on the outside of his held to secure a run in the straight and he was going guns at the end. Was Patiently Handled. It was the capable handling of Modern Maid by the Waikato horseman. W. Rennie, that played a big part In the success of the Little England mare in the Waikato Hurdles on Monday. It was her best performance for some time and she should win further for her connections. Drawing away at the last fence she won in decisive style. Ricked Herself. The Little England mare, Mangukaha, ricked herself on the eve of the Waikato meeting and as a consequence had to forego her engagements at the meeting. She was worked on Sunday, however, and the trouble Is yielding to treatment. It will be a stroke of misfortune for her connections if Mangukaha has to be placed aside at this stage as she is particularly partial to winter conditions. Won Attractively. When Grateful won the open mile on Monday at Te Rapa he did so in attractive style and taking a line through the quality of his success he should not fail to pick up a stake at the approaching Great Northern gathering at Ellerslle. It was the way he finished on that Impressed and he was looking a picture of condition. Becked and Beaten. Prince Acre was backed and beaten in the Maeroa Handicap on the second day of the Waikato meeting. However, he showed up in the early stages of the running and should he all the better for the outing. He had been off the scene for a spell and no doubt was in need of the race. As far as weight was concerned he had evervthing in his favour with 7.0.
Greek Gold. Greek Gold will be heard from shortly if his showing on Monday at Te Rapa can be taken as a true indication of his present fitness. He was fairly well back during the early stages of the running, but was going great guns at the end to finish right up fourth. Fourteenth fancy on either machine ho was paying a fine price for a place. Tooley Street. Tooley Street was galloping over everything at the finish of the open sprint on Monday at Te Rapa and there can be no doubt that lie will be a force to be reckoned with in the decision of the Members’ Handicap on the first day of the approaching Auckland meeting, on Saturday. He was looking a picture of condition here and certainly will lack nothing on the score of condition for engagements at Ellerslie. Mishap to Roxy. It was a stroke of bad fortune for the connections of Roxy that he should have cut himself so severely during the running of the King Country Steeplechase on Monday at Te Rapa and it is almost certain that the Kilbroney gelding will not now be on hand for the Great Northern meeting. In his recent essays over the obstacles Roxy has shown marked promise and it appeared that he would be a force to be reckoned with in Ellerslie engagements.
Third On End. Produced in good fettle by A. C. Jones the Lord Quex Ally Sergia registered her third succes son end when she won the Hangatiki Hack on Monday. she broke her maiden status at the Avondale gathering and after winning attractively at Te Awamutu was sent out a warm favourite for Monday’s engagement. Always handily placed in the running she came through in resolute style in the straight and won with something in reserve. Will Improve. The showing of King Rev In Ihe open six on the second day of the Waikato meeting was indicative or better things. He was galloping strongly at the finish to pass the past close on the heels of the placed division. Withal it was an encouraging exhibition and one on which he should improve. His shoulder injury received during the running of tlie last Auckland Gup appears to have completely righted itself. At one stage it was feared he had seen the last of the race track. Sliver Wattle. Silver Wattle, wiio is now trained by W. J. McLean, at Matamata, put up a surprisingly good showing in the Waikato Hurdles on Monday, setting the pace right to the straight entrance and Jumping confidently throughout. In the straight his condition gave out, which was not surprising as it was his first, race for a considerable spell. That outing should effect improvement in his condition and when next produced in companv; that is not overstrong he may bear keeping in mind. Allegretto. The experience Allegretto has had recently in the hunting field and the solid schooling he had been indulging in during the weeks immediately prior to the meeting stod to him on Monday when he won the Hack Steeplechase attractively. He was produced in good fettle by J. H. King and once the serious business of the race was entered on he gave nothing else a chance, drawing out in the straight t.o win with two and a half lengths to spare. As he is susceptible to further improvement this member of King’s string should win further for his connections. Lion Heart Improves. Showing marked Improvement on his previous e?ays Lion Heart upset calculations In the final event on the first, day of the Waikato meeting when he led practically from end to end to score going away. Now that he appears to have come right again he should be heard of further before the present season draws to a close. That handienpper, Mr F. J. McManemtin, was impressed hv his performance is apparent from the fact that he has rehandicapped the Gay Shield gelding 121 b for the second division of the .Tervois Handicap <it Ellerslie on Saturday.
