An application for a new timber wvorkers' award for the South Auckland, ’l‘aranaki and \Vellington districts was heard in the Arbitration Court to—day as the outcome of an agreement at conciliation proceedings at Palmerston North on May 6. Mr Read, for the North Island Timber \Viorkers’ Federation, brought under the Court's notice the matter of compulsory unionism. lie said he had been in touch with the Minister of Labour, who told him the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. Mr Mead informed the court that. he understood the compulsory union—ism iciziuso would come into force in about a month after the passing of the Act. He wished that. the clause be embodied in the new award. .\ir Seed, representing the employ—ers, said that those engaged in the con~ ciliation proceedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting of the preference clause entirely to the court. so that the riause \\ould be in icompiiance with the new legislation. Mr Justice Page said the court would take lime to consider that point when ‘the legislation went through. and it. would then draw up a clause in acv ‘cordance with the legislation.
