WOMEN ’S INSTITUTE.

AT FRANKTON. Mrs Higgins presided over a good attendance of members, despite inclement weatzher, at the May meeting of the Jubilee Women’s Institute, Frankton. The meeting opened with the creed and the Institute song, after which four new members were welcomed. After the business was dealt with, Mrs Higgins gave an interesting rem port on the bi-annual conference. Ex-i hibits for the Winter Show court were \ discussed and a number of articles was handed to the various oouveners. ‘ Three members volunteered to dress dolls for the Y.W.C.A. stall at the‘ Winter Show. A child’s luncheon competition was Won by Mrs McClean, with Mrs Hogarth second, and the darning and patching competition by Mrs Franks, with Mrs McClean second. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Hayward, Kearvell and J. A. Nelson, and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. . A‘l' TE PAHU. The monthly meeting of the Tel Pahu Women‘s Institute was held ini the hall on May 14, Mrs \Vatt, presi—i (lent, presiding over a good attendance of members. It was decided to donate a doll to the Y.\V.C.A. doll stall at the Winter Show. Mrs Clark, as delegate, gave a very interesting report of the Federation meeting held in Hamilton on April 30. Elocution by Miss E. Smith (Karamu), and pianoforte solos by Miss M. Brown (Auckland) were much era—i joyed. The roll call, “My favourite song or hymn" was well responded to. Competitions resulted:-- Cocoanut ice, Mrs M. Arthur 1, Mrs Watt 2; Chrysanthemums, Miss G. Strong 1, Mrs G. Whittaker 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were .\lesdames Andrew, Carter and. G. A'l' ROTO-O-RANGI. The May meeting of the Roto-o-rangi Women’s Institute was held in the school. In the absence of the president, Mrs Wakefield, who is on a holiday trip to England, Mrs Shale (vice-president) presided over a good attendance. Three new members were enrolled. . The meeting opened with the WJ. song and the repeating of the creed. Correspondence was then dealt with. Two more delegates Mrs R. Martin and Mrs 'Hills, were appointed to attend the wool exhibition meeting on Friday. It was decided not to send a delegate to the Dominion Conference to be held in July in Dunedin. Mrs Workman was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her excellent report of the Waikato Federation meeting held in Hamilton. Remits for the Dominion conference were then discussed. The meeting agreed to support the Y.W.C.A. appeal for dressed dolls for their stall at the Winter Show. Mrs Workman kindly consented to .dress the doll. The roll call, “Uses of lemons,” was well answered. Mrs L. A. Duncan gave the motto, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” A very interesting demonstration of converting used gramophone records into pretty \vall plaques was given by Miss Betty Godfrey. The competition, “Something new from something old,” was won by Miss Doris Lisle, with a pair of slippers, with Mrs Workman second with a tea-cosy and Mrs H. Martin third, lace mats. An amusing competition was won by Miss Gladys Lisle. A cake donated by Mrs Wakefield was won by Mrs \Voods. Ten was served by Mrs \V. Nickle. Mrs E. Nickle, Mrs Roberts and Miss Nickle. An enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. AT MAUNGATAUTARI. The Maungatautari Women's Insti—tute birthday party took the form of_ a social evening in the local hall. A pleasant time was spent with dancing, competitions and items. A pianoforte solo was played by Miss Margaret Ariell and 50105 were sung by Miss J. McLeod, Miss B. McCracken (Hamilton), Miss C. Griffin and Mr G. Peters. Members supplied the dance music. On behalf of the members and in the absence of president and vice» president, Miss Grifiin welcomed the visitors on the occasion of the Maun~ gatauturi \\’.l.'s third birthday and called on Mrs J. T, Hicks to light the candles on the cake and the Misses Ilill and l’cuke to blow them out and Mrs Douglas to rut the rake. A Vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Arioll for making and decorating the cake. which had been given by Mziiiiigutuutari members on the main road. Little Mary Douglas presented Miss Gritlin with a pos)‘ with :1 small gift embedded in it. The National Anthem brought :1 happy evening to a close. GIFT EVENING. Caddigan thanked the donors on her behalf. The young couple were accorded musical honours, and a very pleasant evening closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem. ‘ AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI. ‘ A special meeting of the Naw-ton— Rotokauri Women‘s Institute was held in Nawton Hall for the purpose of receiving articles for the Waikato Winter Show court and to make final arrangements. Members were notified that the next meeting will be held on June 10 instead of June 2, so that the articles in the court may he returned. -—.-’_.——— A'l' FAIRFIELDL The Fairfield Women's Institute held its monthly meeting in St. Andrew’s Hall, on May 20, Mrs Knight presiding. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song, and the National Anthem. During the afternoon Mrs Patterson (Fairfield) gave a very inter—' esting demonstration on seagrass stool making. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs A. Fow for arranging the flowers at the group meeting held , on May 5 and it is to her credit that! the Fairfield Institute gained first prize. l The resignation of Mrs Tattley was l received with regret, and it was de-i cided to give her 12 months’ leave of absence and to send a letter ofi sympathy. One member requested: that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs E. Bullock in her hereavement.‘ The competition for the most original 1 article was awarded to Mrs .\. Fow} and the prize for the best pot oi“ jelly was won by Mrs Storey. The hostesses’ competition (jumbled , words) was won by Mrs W. At the monthly meeting of the Tau- l piri Women's Institute, held in the Taupiri Hall on May 14 and presided over by the president, Mrs L. E. Clarke, there was a large attendance of members. A great deal of business was attended to and a demonstration of enamelled pewter work was given by Mrs A. J. Smith, who also demonstrated how to make paper mache dolls and exhibited some beautiful specimens of her work. E!ocution was given by Mrs A. J. Smith, Miss M.
