SOLICITORS’ OFFICES. PETITION FOR EXEMPTION. EFFECT ON PROFESSION. WELLINGTON, Thursday. Seventy-four Christctytfrch solicitors forwarded a petition to Parliament, which was presented in the House today, asking that the definition of office in the Shops and Offices Act which excludes solicitors’ offices should he retained and that these offices should continue to he Exempt from the provisions. of the Act. They state that if the exemption is not. continued the profession as a whole wiljf he gravely handicapped in rendering professional service to the public, Particularly to that hig section who ape employees and are able to seek Professional assistance only after hours, Th'e petition mentions that it is the practice for solicitors throughout the DoiTijnion to open for an average of 38 h6 ¥>rs a week, to give legal employees approximately 30 days’ holiday annually and to allow them to attend University lectures and prepare for Examinations. For these concessions Employees were accustomed to reciprocate by working longer hours if : called on.
