ARREST OF A BRITON.
ALLEGATIONS BY ITALIANS. ENERGETIC STEPS BEING TAKEN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 22. 3.15 p.m.) > LONDON, May 21. Answering questions concerning Warrant-Officer Bunner. Viscount Cranborne. in the House of Commons, said the Italian authorities maintained that he had been employed with the Abyssinian forces. Mr Eden telegraphed Sir S. Barton. British Minister, who detailed the circumstances of April 19 and added that Bunner told the Consul at. Diredawa that he had lost, or had tyeen deprived oi a packet, containing money. The train left without him while Bunner was making inquiries. The Foreign Office is making every effort to ascertain Bunner's whereabouts. Mr F. 8. Cocks: “What right, under international law, have the Italians to arrest a British subject In a neutral friendly state?” Viscount Cranborne: “I oan assure the House that we are taking the most energetic steps.” In reply to another question. Viscount. Cranborne said he was making inquiries also about the disappearance of a diplomatic bag on the Addis Ababa-Jibouti railway.
On May 19 it was stated that the Italians at Diredawa arrested WarrantOfficer Bunner, attached to the British ambulance unit .in Abyssinia, while he was on the way to Aden for treatment. for rabies. It was feared that the consequent delay would .endanger his chances- of recovery. A British diplomatic bag addressed to the British Consul. Mr Lowe, at Jibouti disappeared between Addis Ababa and Jibouti.
