NGARUAWAHIA NEWS. MEETING OF OOUNCIL. ACUTE SHORTAGE OF HOUSES (Times Representative.) NGARUAWAHIA, Thursday. The second May meeting of the Ngaruawahia Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. His Worship the Mayor, Mr R. Eyre presiding. Also present were Councillors K. M. Wright, C. McCowan, H. D. Sampson, F. I. Hickling, S. S. Saulbrey, J. Prendergast and Mr H. B. Fraser, town clerk. Shortage of Houses. In view of the acute shortage of houses in the borough the Mayor, Mr R. Eyre, submitted a copy of a memorandum which he proposed should be forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The communication pointed, out the many advantages Ngaruawahia presents for the carrying-out of a housing scheme, and contained information regarding the present keen demand for houses by people wishing to live in the town. The council heartily agreed and it was resolved to communicate with the Minister. Municipal Band. A deputation was received from the Municipal Band requesting the council to grant the band a yearly subsidy. The conductor was anxious to obtain two new instruments, and expenses during the year had totalled £4O. After lengthy discussion in committee, the council agreed to give the band £25 a year on condition that the band played for citizens when called upon by the council not less than twelve times per year. General Business. It was decided to purchase £5 worth of Anzac stamps. This would mean that the sum of £2 10s would go to the local R.S.A. funds. Several matters, including a circular received from the Minister of Transport were referred to the executive of the Waikato Traffic Control Group. Subject to the approval of the Auditor-General the council decided to consent to proposals for the adjustment of interest payments made necessary by loan conversions suggested by the Central Waikato Electric Power Board. The payment of accounts totalling £6OO 12s 6d was confirmed. As there is a likelihood of militaritraining at Rotorua being curtailed, the council decided to draw the attention of the Minister of Defence to the facilities offered by the Hopu Hopu camp. To consider plans and estimates with the view of bringing before ratepayers proposals for the raising of a loan for the effecting of improvements in borough side-streets, it was decided to hold a special meeting of the council next Wednesday night. DOMAIN BOARD. MEETING AT NGARUAWAHIA. (Times’ Representative). NGARUAWAHIA, Thursday. Sitting as a Domain Board the Ngaruawahia Borough Council received a deputation from the League Football Club last evening. Messrs Turner and Williams representing the club asked the council to consider clans for the improvement, of the cluß-house at the football ground. The cost of the work would be £24 to which the club would contribute £B. The council decided to undertake the work and the deputation stated that lights would be installed In the club house and two floodlights on the grounds at the club’s expense. The audited balance-sheet showred a credit of £lB and assets valued at £6OO was presented by the treasurer, Mr H. B. Fraser.
