FALSE PRETENCES.
OHARQE AT TE AWAMUTU. BREACH OF PROBATION. (Times Representative.) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. A charge of obtaining money by false pretences in August, 1935, was preferred against Frederick Henry Charles Jenks at a special sitting of the Te Awamutu Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr F. H. Levlen, S.M. Con-stable J. Forsyth said Jenks had been dealt with at Auckland last year and had been placed on probation for one year and had also been ordered to make restitution. Accused had later been convicted of theft and had been sentenced to six months’ hard labour. As the restitution had not been made the probation ofllcer had instructed the police to bring him up again on the original charge of false pretences. The Magistrate said he thought the charge should be for a breach of the terms of the probation order. Accused had been on probation for nine months, two of which had been -spent In prison. In reply to a question Jenks said he was a widower with three children. He had had no work and had been unable to make restitution of the money. Mr Levlen: You could have gone to a camp instead of loafing around looking for easy money. Accused said since his wife had died he had been drinking heavily and it was during that lime that lie had committed the theft for which he was at present serving sentence. He was working in February when he was arrested for the theft which he had committed In November 1935. His Worship decided to adjourn the case until the next sitting of the Magistrate s Court on June 3 to permit further investigations to be made In Auckland.
