MR T. W. SATHERTHWAITE. MAYOR OF TIMARU. TIMARU, Wednesday. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Mr Thomas William Satherthwaite
(65), Mayor of Timaru. For more than a quarter of a century, deceased had been closely associated with municipal governmentMR. T. W. KIRK. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The death of Mr T. W. Kirk, aged 79, occurred this morning. Mr Kirk was best known l'or his work in building up the New Zealand Department of Agriculture, and he did yeoman service organising and supervising its services of inspection and instruction in connection with orchards, market gardening, and beekeeping, lie was a son of the late Professor T. Kirk, the eminent botanist and forester, and arrived in New Zealand when seven years old. His first appointment was as assistant curator of the museum in Wellington, and later he served-under the Education Department, finally being transferred to the Department of Agriculture, in which his wide knowledge and experience were invaluable. He is survived by his widow and son. A younger brother is Professor H. B. Kirk, of Victoria University College, Wellington. NON OGENAR lAN’S DEATH. REARED FAMILY OF 17. WHAN GAR El, Wednesday. Mr Charles I-lawken, one of the best known figures in Northland for the past 75 years, died to-day, aged 97. A native of Cornwall, lie arrived in this district in his early twenties, and made a model farm put of dense bush country. He reared a family of 17, 15 of whom survive.
