MOUNT EVEREST
I SETBACK TO CLIMBERS. I ! EVACUATION OF CAMP 4. MONSOON TO BE FACED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. Received May 20, 3 0 p.m.) LONDON; May 19. A copyright, message from Mr Hugh Ruttledge at Camp 3 says : “Since further snowfalls are probable Smytlie and I, consulting by wireless, decided to evacuate Gamp 4 temporarily. Smythe, Ship ton and porters arrived here after a brilliant descent, and must now wait until the snow’ clears." The Telegraph says that the Mount Everest climbers are facing a desperate race with a monsoon, which arrived at Ceylon yesterday ten days earlier than expected and should reach Everest about June 10 if it crosses India at the usual speed, when further climbing will be impossible. Now the climbers, who have thus only three weeks left, have experienced a further setback through snow compelling the evacuation of Gamp 4.
