LEPERS ESCAPE
SIX DESPERATE MEN. BEVEN PEOPLE MURDERED. ISLANDERS FEAR INFECTION. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. MANILA, May 18. Six desperate lepers escaped to-day from the Gulion Island leper station and killed seven people. They are believed to be on the way south to Borneo. The lepers were armed and were under the leadership of one called Abdullah. They killed four fishermen in order to obtain their boat and then, stopping at Abcabo Island, they killed three more people and robbed Chinese stores. Subsequently the lepers proceeded to Bono Bono, but the citizens drove them off. Then they seized another hoat and escaped to sea. The islanders were afraid to lay hands on the lepers for fear of contracting the disease. Members of the constabulary are conducting a search on islands in the vicinity. Gulion Island is one of the western Phillippines. Its leper settlement is of very considerable size and is conducted on the most modern lines. Of 4000 leprosy cases in all stages recently treated more than GOO have already cleared up and been shown bacteriologically negative.
