POULTRY KEEPERS
MARKETING OF EGGS. CONTROL BY PRODUOERB. STABILISATION OF PRICES. Decisions reached at a recent conference In Wellington of the New Zealand Poultry Producers’ Federation were discussed and confirmed at a well-attended meeting of the Hamilton West and Hamilton East branches of the Federation in the Toorak Hall last evening. The president of the Hamilton West branch, Mr L. Marquand, presided. A communication was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Poultry Producers’ Federation in answer to a remit forwarded by the branches to the effect that the federation should affiliate with the Farmers’ Union. The communication stated that it would not be advisable at the present time to affiliate with the Farmers’ Union, but there was nothing to prevent individual members Joining this body if they so wished- A questionnaire had been received from the Government and had been fully discussed by the federation. It had been unanimously decided by the federation to support the producer control scheme. Once producer control was In operation, the communication continued, the question of reductions In tlie prices of poultry foods would automatically be considered. The first thing was to put marketing control on the map and stop all price manipulation in eggs. Government Questionnaire. A circular was received from the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, reporting on the deputation that had waited on him from the New Zealand Poultry TSoard. In this circular were set out the question* submitted by the Minister to the Poultry Federation's Conference In Wellington. One question asked whether egg producers would wish their product brought under the guaranteed price procedure. The Government* through its own marketing organisation, would buy all eggs entering certain markets, prices paid being schedule rates for national grades of produce delivered at specified point* and under specified condition*. The second proposal in the questionnaire, referring to producer control, was to the effect that a marketing committee empowered to control prices, be set up. Such a committee would be comprised of Government and producers’ representatives, and would be empowered to fix areas of operation, to license distributors, to arrange grade stores and determine grades, to operate in pulp, preserved and chilled eggs, to regulate prices, to pool returns and finally to be under Government supervision to ensure that consumers were safeguarded. (This proposal was accepted by the poultry conference In Wellington.) It was resolved to forward a letter to the secretary of the Dominion Federation thanking him for his information and confirming the decision* made at the Wellington conference.
