PRICE OF TIMBER.
NO CHANGES ANNOUNCED. AWARDS OPERATIVE ON JUNE i. Although statements emanating from Auckland affirm that timber merchants have issued a new schedule of prices representing an advance of about 15 per -cent to meet the increased costs under the new labour awards of the Government, any price increases were denied by an executive
officer of a milling firm in Hamilton to-day.
He stated that there had be no change in prices and, as the new awards did not operate until June 1, the sawmillers did not intend to draw up the new schedules until the position was settled. The basic wage for employees was being raised from 11s 6d and 12s to 14s 8d per day and it was probable that the Increase of 20 per cent would be met by a corresponding increase in prices.
He added that the position was at present being discussed with the Government.
