GARDEN PLACE HILL.

NOT FOR CHAMBER. NO PLAGE FOR POLITICS. The opinion that the Chamber should not participate in local politics, and that in future political questions should be left out of all discussions, was expressed at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last evening, when the president, Mr 11. D. Caro, presided. In opening the question the chairman stated that a public meeting was called to obtain an opinion of the Chamber oil the Carden Place scheme purely from the point of view as to whether it would be advisable to have the Post Office on the western side of Victoria Street. Now that was done he thought the Chamber should not discuss the matter again, and should in future avoid political subjects. “We hardly had a Chamber of Commerce opinion. The meeting resolved Itself into a Borough Council meeting,” added Mr J. R. Henderson- j Seeing that the whole scheme had eventually to be placed before the ratepayers before anything could be done, Mr F. Beehan thought that the Chamber should leave the matter alone and a resolution on the lines suggested was carried. Need for New Post Office. It was pointed out that this did not mean that the Chamber was going to drop the question of a new Post Office for Hamilton. Several members remarked, upon the urgent necessity lor a new Post Office with all the postal facilities under one roof. The fact that the last Government had j promised the town a new office and l had placed £50,000 on Ihe estimates ! for the building was mentioned by Mr j Caro, and it was decided to write to j the Postmaster-General stressing the urgency of the question. It was resolved that the location of the new building should not be argued by tlie Chamber, but that the office srould be sought immediately.
