ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
SATURDAY’S GAMES. WANDERERB’ SURPRIBE WIN. IMPROVED FORM SHOWN. After their good display at Rotowaro last Saturday and the very indifferent showing of the blue and whites against Pukemiro, Rovers were confidently expeoted to beat Wanderers in the senior Association football match played at Seddon Park on Saturday. However, the Hamilton combination, showing vastly improved form, prevailed in a hard fought game in which the score was a fair indication of the trend of the play. As on the previous Saturday C. Crabb revealed very fine form and his goal was a gem, worthy of a forward of the highest calibre. On defence there was not a sounder player on the ground than the Wanderers’ full-back McLean, who broke up many promising movements. For Rovers, Webster in goal was outstanding, his saving being of a very high order, while on attack Kennedy impressed.
The teams were as follows:—Rovers: Webster, Clark, Parkes, Davies, D. Crabb, A. Francis, Moore, Rogers, Farr, Kennedy, Wallace. Wanderers: Burdis, A. Crabb, McLean, Mangnall, Caldwell, Jackson, Griffiths, C. Crabb, Stewart, Donaldson, Fisher.
Wanderers went to the attack at the commencement but Rovers relieved from a corner and assumed the offensive. When Farr received, the centre forward shot but the ball went astray. Remaining on the offensive, Rovers again came within shooting distance but could not hold the advantage, Wanderers returning play to the opposition circle, but Rovers relieved with a penalty for a foul against Fisher. The blue and whttes maintained pressure but could not put their efforts to any good purpose. Rovers Press Hard. Rovers made a determined effort to score but Rogers shot high and lost the advantage. Farr took the ball downfield, passed to Kennedy anil crossed' to Davies, but the winger’s shot went outside the post—a good opportunity lost. Rovers were at it again but a good attacking movement was spoilt when A. Crabb intercepted and cleired. Wanderers Score First. Following a weak kick by Francis, Caldwell secured the ball and crossed to the centre, where Donaldson deflected the ball in to the net for a very j clever goal. Wanderers 1, Rovers 0. j Rovers retaliated but McLean, who ; was defending well, cleared in fine j style for the blue and whites to return to the Rovers’ circle. Half-time found j Wanderers on the offensive. Swift exchanges marked the re- i sumption of play and, when Wander- ! ers attacked, Stewart shot unsuccessfully for the red and whites to clear, but Wanderers came again and C. Crabb made a brilliant run to send home a neat one. Wanderers 2 Rovers 0. A good opportunity was lost when Kennedy muffed in attempting to shoot at the completion of fine combined effort on the part of the Claudeiands team. Wanderers again pressed but Donaldson got offside when things looked dangerous. The team again invaded the opposition circle hut as before their efforts were nullified when ; Fisher was penalised. Wanderers’ Third Goal. A fine combined movement culmin- ! ated in Stewart finding the net after ! Webster had made desperate efforts ! to clear. Wanderers kept up the at- : t-ack but Webster proved exceptionally safe and made many spectacular saves. At this stage Rovers’ last, line of defence was playing outstanding football. A Rovers’ sally was frustrated when McLean cleared, but the Claudelands team were not to he denied, Rogers getting past a hot shot to open Rovers’ account. Wanderers 3, Rovers 1. At this 'stage Rovers were making desperate strides to catch the opposition but their efforts proved fruitless, time being called without any alteration in the score. Mr E. Marsh was referee.
