EUROPE DESIRES PEACE
GERMAN CONSUL’S VIEW. OCCUPATION OF RHINELAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. Remarking that Auckland reminded Mm of the French Mediterranean Port of Toulon, Baron von Stechow, the newly-appointed German Vice-Con-sul at Sydney, who is a passenger by the Monterey, said he has heard much about New Zealand and Australia, and is greatly looking forward to his work in Australia. He has been in the Consulate service for ten years, and has travelled extensively in Europe. The Count said Europe desired peace and he did not think there was any danger of war there. Referring to Germany, he said the unemployed had been reduced from 6,500,000 a few years ago to less than 2,000,000 now. Replying to the question on the Rhineland occupation, he said the view of the German people was that Germany merely sent troops into her own territory the same as if Britain stationed troops at Portsmouth.
