The Navy list shows the unprecedented position that only eight capital ships are in full commission, the Nelson. Rodney, and Hood with the Home fleet, the Barham, Valiant. Queen Elizabeth, and Renown in the Mediterranean. The Repulse will go to the Mediterranean on June 8. The Daily Telegraph’s naval correspondent explains that the situation is partly due to modernising the old ships and partly to the shortage of personnel due to special measures in the Mediterranean. The warsplte Malaya and Royal Oak are being refitted with special aircraft equipment. Four other battleships are laid up, presumably for lack of personnel. The destroyers have Increased from 54 to 78 and other auxiliaries have keen largely augmented.
