PRINCESS ELIZABETH’S TENTH BIRTHDAY WINDSOR, April 2i. Princess Elizabeth was excused lessons to-day, says a writer In an English paper. Reason: It was her tenth birthday. She spent It at her parent’s home, Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park, where Queen Mary is staying for a short holiday. An early visitor to the nursery was the Duchess of York, who wished her daughter many happy returns of the day. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose were awakened half an hour earlier than usual because, to mark the gTeat day, they were allowed to have breakfast with their parents and Queen Mary. They arrived in the white-and-gold breakfast room dressed alike In pale-blue frocks, and Princess Elizabeth then received the good wishes of her father and her grandmother. Princess Margaret Rose was Just as excited as her sister. After breakfast they were taken to the drawing-room, where there were birthday presents by the hundred. They had been arriving by special messenger for the last two days. All were wrapped In gaily-coloured paper and tied with blue and gold ribbon. The first to be opened was a orate containing a small electrloallydrlven motor-car from the Duke and Duchess of York. It Is painted *ln Royal ooloirrs with the Princess’ own coat of arms on the door. It has a dash-board, wind screen wiper, and all modern accessories. The body Is streamlined, but Its speed is not more than five miles an hour, all out. In another package the Prinoess found a new bicycle, the gift of Queen Mary. Margaret Rose’s present was a life-size doll and cradle, from Princess Elizabeth’s uncles and aunts were several articles & furniture for her doll’s house, which was given to her four years ago by the people of Wales. Unpacking the presents took two hours. Among them were tokens of good wishes from almost every famous family in the country. The King’s Hidden Treasure. When the pleasant task was completed, the Princess was told to hunt through the house for her present from the King. It took her 20 minutes to find it, hidden in a secluded corner. It was a gold mounted riding crop bearing her crest and the initial E. Later in the morning Princess Elizabeth spoke to the King on the telephone and received his best wishes. After she had tried her skill with her new car and bicycle, she went for a ride in Windsor Forest on her white pony, Peggy. This afternoon she went for a drive with Queen Mary. A tea party, with Princess Elizabeth as hostess, was another big item tn the day’s programme. There was a huge cake bearing the lighted candles. “ Uncle David ” —the King—sent a note of apology. Business prevented him from being present. Princess Elizabeth is sending him a slice of cake to Buckingham Palace. This evening both children will stay up later than usual to take part in the games which the Duchess has arranged. When the band of Ihr Coldstream Guards marched to Windsor Castle for the changing of the Guard, they played, as a compliment to the Princess, the tune ” Princess Elizabeth.’’
